What font does Perplexity use?

An AI answer engine is mostly reading, so Perplexity built its own family: a sans, a serif and a mono under the PPLX name. The logged-out home page shows only the sans, and only a little of it.

Short answer: Perplexity uses PPLX Sans, a custom variable font, for its home page, at unusually light weights between 350 and 470. FK Grotesk Neue, PPLX Serif and Berkeley Mono are loaded for answers and code.

The main font stack in the CSS:

font-family: pplxSans, ui-sans-serif, system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", Arial, "Noto Sans", sans-serif, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Noto Color Emoji";
  • Weights of 350, 360 and 470 are only possible with a variable font. Most sites round to 400 and 500.
  • Body text sets font-variation-settings explicitly to "DRKM" 0, "slnt" 0.
  • FK Grotesk Neue by Florian Karsten and the commercial Berkeley Mono are declared and partly downloaded, but no visible text used them on the home page.

About the fonts, and whether you can use them

PPLX Sans

Perplexity’s own sans serif, served as one variable file still labeled Beta. Besides weight and slant it exposes a custom axis named DRKM.

Can you use it? No. PPLX Sans is proprietary. Inter and Geist are free variable sans serifs that offer the same fine control over weight.

On Google Fonts: Inter, Geist.

This starter uses Inter, which is open source, with the sizes and spacing measured above. It is an approximation, not a copy of Perplexity’s brand typeface.

How we checked

We opened perplexity.ai in Chrome on November 5, 2026 and read the computed styles of its visible text: the declared font stack, the font actually rendered, and how much of the page’s text each family sets. That is the same data the Font Inspector extension shows under Fonts on this page. We re-check these pages periodically, and the date above shows the last inspection.

How can I check what font Perplexity uses myself?
